What Is OA Pain in Canines?

Osteoarthritis, also known as OA or degenerative joint disease, is a painful and chronic condition that can affect any dog, regardless of their breed, size, or age. OA is the most common cause for chronic pain in dogs and it’s estimated 80% of dogs suffer from some form of osteoarthritis by the time they reach 8 years-old. 35% of dogs are affected by OA before they reach 8 years of age. 

There are many factors that determine whether your dog will develop OA including breed, genetics, past injuries, body weight, and age, but sadly no dog is immune to developing osteoarthritis. 

Osteoarthritis worsens over time, making it a serious debilitating issue that can rob dogs of their ability to move, run, play, or simply spend time with their family without pain, which greatly affects their quality of life. 

Previously, treatment for OA in canines relied heavily on the use of NSAIDs for relief from chronic pain, but now there’s new treatment option for canines with OA pain. 

How Librela Treats Canine OA Pain

Librela is a first of its kind monthly injectable treatment for OA pain in canines.

Librela is not an NSAID or traditional pain killer, it is an injectable Monoclonal Antibody Therapy that works by targeting NGF, or Nerve Growth Factor. NGF is a protein that activates and binds to the pain receptors inside nerves causing chronic pain in canines with OA. Librela binds to NGF which prevents OA pain, reduces inflammation, and limits the release of NGF in the future.
